It could be nice if the panning could be done using the pen like the hand tool in desktop version of Acrobat Reader or in unwrapped view of Repligo viewer. I suggest this behavoir becuse I think it could be a lot more intuitive to use.
 
About file compression what about PNG format? I think it is the best format for raster image of a map.

I'm releasing a new version of the VDIVC application. It is using "zlib" compression library - the same thing PNG format is using. This is the best option for now. It is widely used, ported to almost anything and totally patent-free... You are right it works great for schematics, maps and diagrams. The performance on unfiltered photos is quite unimpresive though, but I'll add some filtering eventually...
